Wrong Side of Glory - Summary & Info

Currently in the process of writing, editing, and publishing content for Wrong Side of Glory

Wrong Side of Glory is a Web Novel independent of Cacoethes' other series based in the Aether Aevran Universe. It takes place in a land called Aishold, divided into five major territories each ruled by opposing or allied factions of magicians. These factions are often monarchal in nature with an emphasis on the importance of blood. These five major territories are ruled by clans, and they are the oldest clans, so they are thus called the Five Legendary Dynasties.

Not everyone is lucky enough to be born into a clan. Not everyone is lucky to be born magical or even human. The clans originally came together to purge the humans from the sentient beasts that would seek to prey on them, literally called Beasts. These aren't the only threats either. Depending on internal and external, feminine and masculine, energies -- monsters and gods alike can be created from common folk, powerful magicians, and lone animals minding their own business in the woods. The clans focus on fighting all monsters and beasts -- the things they consider evil or without use to their society.

Wrong Side of Glory focuses on a young magician boy whose mother dies, named Nilhin.

With no one left to save him by himself, Nilhin strives to get stronger, but no matter how hard he works and how honourable he tries to be, obstacles keep standing in his way. Chapter Directory

Part One:

Summary: Nilhin is forced to leave his dying mother, Nilbi -- a prostitute at Ya Brothel -- to find his father. He leaves, but only so his father, a wealthy man in a different territory, will pay for a doctor since he is poor. Nilhin undertakes this adventure with only a few necklaces and a handful of money while he is still only thirteen (nearly fourteen) years old.

Summary: Friendly merchant Nehe gives Nilhin a ride to Villas, a town closer to the destination of Capvita, where his father lives. They do some things, like cuddle and Nilhin eats baneberries that have never poisoned him before despite their toxicity to humans.

Summary: While Nehe and his wife, Tsani, aren’t all that meets the eye, Nilhin makes a friend during unfortunate circumstances. A boy named Maer.

Summary: After Nilhin is held captive, he refuses to remain that way. He uses his limited magical knowledge to escape. Something strange occurs, but it is easily chocked up to his emotional haze. Together with Maer, Nilhin helps rescue and release the other confined children, but they have no real place to go.

Summary: Despite losing a fairweather friend, Nilhin makes it to Capvita to see his father. Only his father is a clan leader of a legendary dynasty with no time for bastards. Nilhin’s humiliation doesn’t sit right with him, but he has no way to retaliate. His only option is to return home empty handed and hope his mother can overcome her illness.

Summary: After a harrowing journey, Nilhin returns to Ya Brothel. His mother… The Madam wishes to see him, and in the end, he is left without any home at all. Now he must do what his mother said, and join a clan just so he won’t die once exposed to the elements come the winter season.

Summary: Once Nilhin arrives at Storkott, the home of the Hvit Clan, he is faced with new faces and old challenges: being hated by those who are supposed to be his allies. His subunit of recruits, the Orikani, already has an intense opinion of him solely based on the jealousy of one young master.

Summary: To escape his bullying, Nilhin had found solace in the Hvit Library. The main librarian just wants to help the boy who lives between her aisles, but it’s clear that there’s some secret he’s keeping, even from himself.

Summary: The Orikani sub-unit is sent after a squirrel beast. After attacking and assaulting Nilhin, the group leader gets what he deserves, but what will happen to the beast that saved Nilhin?

Summary: Ogar wasn’t killed by the squirrel beast, but a fox beast. That could only mean…

Summary: Xiu Ming is a legendary figure and the only fox paragon known to survive past adolescence. His power was unimaginable, and is the reason that fox paragons are so feared.

Summary: Nilhin faces more discrimination at the hands of his team mates, and is rushed to the infirmary after an attack. He is healed, but his newly found secret comes to light, putting him in even more danger than ever before. Not only will he be hated for what he isn’t, but for what he is.

Chapter Thirteen: The Escape Plan

Summary: General Gronjas lays his hand flat, displaying everything for Nilhin to see. He’s the only person not willing to put Nilhin to death, even if Nilhin didn’t have anything good to say about the man he thought was his friend.

Chapter Fourteen: First Prince of Zaw

Summary: Nilhin finds safety in the mountainous depths of the Zaw Clan’s cities and fortress, Neuma, but his new freedom comes at some costs. Are these costs -- and the accompanying threats -- worth it?

Chapter Fifteen: Good Intentions, Bad Promotions

Summary: After over six months of working in Neuma as a servant, Nilhin gets a ‘promotion’ that nobody could foresee. Someone in a higher position of authority has taken an interest in the mysterious new servant that slipped right through the cracks and scrutiny of the clan leader.

Chapter Sixteen: Dinner With His Excellency

Summary: Those employed in the dungeons are called to celebrate at the high table with the clean leader himself. Rejoice! The clan leader takes an uncomfortable interest in Nilhin for his unorthodox interrogation techniques.

Chapter Seventeen: Catnip Reveal

Summary: The clan leader has known all along, hasn’t he? Otherwise, why else would he do what he had done? Nilhin has nowhere else to go, and his only chance for sanctity is within Neuma… That’s why his second promotion is most unexpected.

Chapter Eighteen: Unusual Technique

Summary: Clan Leader Rronov educates Nilhin in the ways of fox spirits based on the Zaw clan’s study of the creatures. A proposal to increase his magical ability is put forth, and despite the discomfort it brings Nilhin, it is undeniably effective.

Chapter Nineteen: Capvita (Part One)

Summary: Zaw Rronov visits Capvita for a meeting with the clan leaders, and upon seeing the Daha Clan and their unending internal conflicts, comes to a realisation that could one day change the whole of Aishold.

Chapter Twenty: Capvita (Part Two)

Summary: Still in Capvita, Zaw Rronov is informed of his new prodigy’s true origin from the wine-loosened lips of Luc Gallus. More conclusions are drawn, and Zaw Rronov has never been anything but determined in his stubbornness.

Chapter Twenty-One: Return of the Second Prince

Summary: The Second Prince of Zaw returns early from his tour of his clan’s territory. He proceeds to do what he’s good at: causing problems.

Chapter Twenty-Two: The Wanted Son

Summary: Zaw Rronov returns from his meeting and proposes a specific alliance with Nilhin. Seeing the benefit for them both, neither Rronov or Nilhin could disagree with starting such a relationship.

Wrong Side of Glory - Chapter One: Departing From The Den

Chapter One: Departing From The Den HIS MOTHER'S ROOM was stuffy with sickness, but his mother wasn’t well enough to visit the outdoors anymore for fresh air. The opened windows did nothing to help the stifling indoors. Nilhin knelt at the side of the ornate bed meant for his mother to entertain her guests, men who wanted nothing more to rut against his precious mother, unaware of how amazing she truly was. Nilbi, his mother, held his small hands between her own, stroking the back of his knuckles with her thumbs like she had when he was far younger. He was almost fourteen years old -- the age that the aunties had decided he would soon put all the knowledge of human pleasure they taught him to use. Nilhin didn’t want to become a courtesan like his mother, but he didn’t want to leave her either. Due to the complications of her illness, he may not get a choice in the matter.  “You know what I’m going to say,” his mother said, correctly so. Nilhin nodded and pressed his forehead agains...

Wrong Side of Glory - Chapter Fourteen: First Prince of Zaw

Chapter Fourteen: First Prince of Zaw TWO DAYS LATER, Gronjas was preparing a carriage and a small army of servants to accompany them on their journey into Tbai. He brought no other disciples or warriors with them, and put a cloth hat on Nilhin’s head to help disguise him among his servants as they exited the Hvit Fortress. Their journey to the Tbai border would take nearly three weeks, and it was along the border that they were to meet with the first prince of Zaw.  The journey was long and arduous, but it was only this way because Nilhin had to suffer the constant and persistent company of Gronjas, who didn’t trust him not to run away it seemed. Gronjas kept Nilhin by his side, despite having dressed and told him to act like a servant. He was not treated like a servant, he was treated like a well-liked criminal being transported.  However, they soon came across a bustling city, flourishing under the border between territories, and built into the side of a small mountai...

Wrong Side of Glory - Chapter Five: Power And Imbalance

Chapter Five: Power And Imbalance NILHIN'S ARMS WERE covered in dirt and mud. He had tried to wash them off in the water, as well as he had tried to prepare the animals he had caught for the children to eat, too, but dirt stuck in the crevices of his elbows and his forearms, and under all his long nails. He would have to cut his nails when he found an instrument to do so, because no matter how much he wanted to just drag them down the side of a tree, he couldn’t imagine how terribly those nails might catch on his clothes or his friends alike. They were really sharp, just like his mother’s, except she always knew how to be careful with them. Nilhin wasn’t used to them, and had cut his pants in two different places since they randomly grew out. It must have been more magic that he used accidentally.  “Maer?” Nilhin asked, guiding the buffalo back to the cart. He found Maer spread out on the bench, asleep, and the children were all asleep too. Nilhin was shocked for a moment, bu...
